In areas regulated by the Uniform Building Code (UBC), zones 0-1 are classified as non-seismic and zones 2-4 are seismic. In areas regulated by the International Building Code (IBC), there are 3 parameters related to building design that affect the determination if an elevator requires a seismic design: Seismic Design Category, Design Spectral Response at a short period – SDS, and elevator component Importance Factor – IP.
